The construction industry is seeing a steady rise of glazing systems failures in the past decade, including windows, curtain walls and storefront systems that are leaking, unstructurally sound and do not meet code. Mark Baker, P.E., president of IBA Consultants, Inc., states that inadequate specifications and improper glazing submittals are often the culprits behind many glazing system failures. Baker warns architects to "Be Wary of Suppliers Bearing Gifts" since many material suppliers freely recommend products that are inappropriate for a project. The New Florida Building Code: What It Really Means for Residents

Some critics will say that the code has raised the cost of new homes and renovations because of the mandate for better protection of building openings, namely windows and doors. There are even advertisements in the marketplace urging residents to purchase windows now and save money before the new code begins. But the truth of the matter is that the new code is about safety, protection and peace of mind...not cost.

Manatee Adapts to Building Codes
Bradenton Herald, February 2002 – Local building codes will be swept away Friday with the implementation of a new statewide building code, threatening to toss local builders, inspectors and homeowners into a period of adjustment and re–education. At the heart of the code are new wind zone designations based on projected wind speeds during hurricanes, according to Dave Ellwanger, vice president of IBA Consultants Inc., an expert in wall, roofing and waterproofing with offices in Sarasota, Miami and Boca Raton.

Tougher Building Rules Take Industry By Storm
Ft. Myers News–Press, February 2002 – Starting Friday, new homes in Florida will have to use less energy, be safer in a storm and have lower windstorm insurance rates. They’ll also likely cost more. The rules apply to builders seeking permits on March 1 or later and the implications of the state’s long–delayed new building code are many for those who build, sell and buy homes. One question hanging over the change is whether the building industry will be ready to implement the new code. "One in four or five contractors may not necessarily be doing the right thing and the problem may be identifying who they are," said Mark Baker, head of IBA Consultants, a wall engineering specialist with offices in Sarasota and Miami. "I think it’s going to be the Wild West for the first couple months."
